Convert Excel to PDF: what to expect

Spreadsheets are awkward to share: recipients see different column widths, accidentally sort a range, or lack the application. A PDF fixes the numbers on the page and prints predictably.

The most common surprise is pagination. A wide sheet with no print area set becomes many narrow pages. Set a print area and “fit to one page wide” in your spreadsheet app before converting, and the PDF follows.

Charts embedded in sheets render as vector graphics. Pivot tables render as their last cached state. External links and macros are not evaluated.

Questions, answered

Why did my sheet split into many pages?
No print area or scaling was set in the file. Set “fit to 1 page wide” and a print area, then convert again.
Are formulas recalculated?
No. Cached values from your last save are used.
Are all sheets included?
All visible sheets, in order.
Do charts come out sharp?
Yes, as vector graphics.
CSV files?
Not yet. Save as XLSX or ODS first.
