One file, every page
All pages go into a single multi-page TIFF, the way archives and fax systems expect, rather than a folder of separate images.
Three colour modes
Colour and greyscale use lossless LZW compression. Black and white uses CCITT Group 4, the compact standard for faxes and document management systems.
Resolution you choose
72 DPI for screen previews, 150 DPI for everyday use and 300 DPI for print and archive quality.
Convert PDF to TIFF: what to expect
TIFF is still required in places that value predictability over convenience: fax gateways, court and land-registry filings, medical and insurance archives, and older document management systems. Many of them specify “multi-page TIFF, Group 4, 200 or 300 DPI”, which is exactly what the black-and-white mode produces at 300 DPI.
Each page is rendered from the PDF, so text, vector graphics and images are all captured as pixels at the resolution you pick. Higher DPI means sharper text and larger files; a 300 DPI colour page is several megabytes, while the same page in Group 4 black and white is usually well under 100 KB.
Black-and-white mode turns every pixel into pure black or white, which is ideal for text and line drawings and poor for photographs. Use greyscale or colour for pages with pictures.
