Add a text watermark to a PDF: what to expect
A watermark is a message to the reader: this is a draft, this is confidential, this copy belongs to someone. It does not stop copying, and it should not pretend to. It sets expectations.
We draw the watermark as vector text on top of the page content, which is why it stays sharp and adds almost no size. Because it is on top, it is visible even over images and coloured backgrounds.
Image watermarks, logos and custom colours are planned. If you need the watermark to be hard to remove, the honest answer is that no PDF watermark is tamper-proof; combine it with Protect PDF to restrict editing.
Questions, answered
- Can I use an image or logo?
- Not yet. Text watermarks ship first.
- Can someone remove it?
- A determined person can remove any PDF watermark. It is a signal, not a lock.
- Can I change colour or angle?
- Not yet. Diagonal light grey is the one style available at launch.
- What characters are allowed?
- Letters, digits, spaces and basic punctuation, up to 60 characters.
- Does it cover images?
- Yes. It sits above all page content.
