Add page numbers to a PDF: what to expect
Page numbers are what turns a pile of merged PDFs into a document. They matter most when people print, reference sections in a meeting, or need to say “see page 7”.
We draw the numbers as real text in a standard font, not as images. That keeps them crisp at any zoom, selectable and searchable, and adds almost nothing to the file size.
Numbers are placed relative to each page’s own size, so a landscape page in a portrait document still gets its number in the right corner. If a page already has numbers, the new ones sit alongside; remove the old ones first if that matters.
Questions, answered
- Can I start from a number other than 1?
- Not yet. A start offset is on the list.
- Can I skip the first page?
- Not yet. Extract the cover, number the rest, then merge.
- Which font is used?
- Helvetica, a standard PDF font every viewer has.
- Are the numbers images?
- No, real text. Selectable, searchable, crisp.
- Does it work on scans?
- Yes. The number is drawn on top of the page image.
